Desiree Faddis

"I just wanted to make my life better. I felt there was a greater purpose for me out there."

Gone are the days of frying in the Faddis family. "Over the last ten years, we have become more health conscious," she says. Her family eats less red meat and grills their foods more often. "I've definitely added more vegetables to our family meals."

Desiree says it is not impossible to eat healthy on a limited income. Planning family meals a week at a time helps, she says. Desiree says it also helps that her husband is interested in healthy cooking. Both Desiree and her husband, William, watch cooking shows and collect recipe books. Desiree says her daughter, Tatiana, 13, loves fish and her son, Guillermo, 17, loves broccoli.

Desiree said that health was not always her interest. She says she used to abuse drugs but became clean about ten years ago. Desiree was a teen mother and was on her own at the age of 14. After putting herself through college, she now runs the School Age Parenting and Infant Development Program at San Diego High School.
