The LEAN GIS Application is an easy-to-use internet based Geographic Information System (GIS) designed to help public health and other professionals use maps to create visual, geographic representations of existing data. (Go to GIS Data to learn about LEAN GIS data layers.) This tool allows users to turn symbolized data layers on and off, to pan and zoom, and to display information about data layer item(s).

Data Layers

Data layers are GIS (spatial) data such as LEAN Regions or Census Blocks that are symbolized based on various attributes, such as the number of Food Stamp Recipients or the predominant ethnic group of the Census Block. Refer to the GIS Data section for more information about each data layer.

Drawing Layers

To turn layers on or off simply check the box next to the data layer name on or off and then click the Redraw button at the bottom of the list of layers. (Note: You can turn multiple layers on or off before redrawing the map.)

Keep in mind that it does not make sense to have certain combinations of layers turned on. For example Major Cities can be seen on top of FS Recipient Density, but FS Recipient Density will completely cover Number of FS Recipients. Layers that are higher on the legend draw before layers lower on the legend.

Visibility of Census Block-based layers is also subject to a scale threshold. If zoomed (see Zoom In/Zoom Out) out too far, these layers take a long time to draw and the detail cannot be seen.
